Google’s Big Blunder: “This site may harm your computer”.

January 31st, 2009 | 5 Comments | Posted in Alert, Google by admin

Since this morning every search query on Google.com is labeled with “This site may harm your computer.” What the heck! Even Google’s own pages are labeled with the same warning. Even if you want to ignore that warning, google will stop you on next page with another big warning:
Warning - visiting this web site may harm your computer!”

This is clearly a blunder of Google and may be potential lawsuit from many company for harming their online reputation. As I write this, there is no warning information on google blog

See this screen snap:

Update: As of 10:25 ET, things are just fine but the reddit community confirms that Google searches were suffered worldwide. No word from Google Yet.

Update: 12:02 EST, Google has posted an update to its official Google blog that attributes this fairly major “bug” to human error: “We periodically receive updates to that list and received one such update to release on the site this morning. Unfortunately (and here’s the human error), the URL of ‘/’ was mistakenly checked in as a value to the file and ‘/’ expands to all URLs.

Earlier Google Blog reported that Google gets its list of bad URLs from stopBadware.org. However, stopnadware.org denied such statement. Later, Google updated its earlier post and stated that “bug” was due human error.

‘/’ has been removed and placed where it belongs to… :) All in all, things are happy now!

Update: 3:05 ET, I notice that some of my legitimate gmail email that I received between this down time, went to spam folder of my gmail:

See this screen snap of legitimate email that I used to get in my inbox but today it went to spam.

Example 1: Google’s own email went to Spam

Prezi - The Zooming Presentation Editor: Infinite space on one slide

January 22nd, 2009 | 4 Comments | Posted in Amusing Stuff, Creative innovation, Reviews, Web 2.0 by admin

Are you looking for some tool for presentation but not from Microsoft -powerpoint? Prezi is incredible service will change the way we create presentations. Do you remember when you want to present a flow chart in slides with boxes and arrows but it always goes in linear (and boring) fashion. Then Prezi is an answer for you to add coolness to ideas!

Prezi is a nonlinear presentation editor, with a very intuitive interface and support for online sharing. With the help of Prezi you can create dynamic and visually structured zooming presentations using texts, videos, drawings, and present it as a very dynamic and free experience. (Prezi definition: via aether.hu)

Whole presentation laid out as if it’s prepared on the dining room table, and you zoom in and out to your presentation topics based on predefined path. Its like infinite space on one slide! Sounds interesting? It is more engaging for the audience than waiting for the next predictable slide. I guess this kind of presentation is fun to create for composer and fun to watch for audience too! Creativity is a prime key here.

See demo here to see what you can do with Prezi and find a different prospective of presentation. Currently registration is available by invitation only.

I can’t say much about the service, because I haven’t got my invite yet, but I’ve tried the demo (see here) on the site and it’s a “wow” so far. When you sign up for the beta invite at the site, write down that you read about Prezi @ Technology Madness blog

New Website for Obama’s White house - Change has come to Whitehouse.gov

January 20th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Creative innovation, Reviews, Technology Talk, Website of the week by admin

The Inauguration Ceremony went nicely. As President Barack Obama was giving his inauguration speech, another transfer of power was happening online. At exactly 12 PM ET, Whitehouse.gov , the official Website of the President switched over to a new design. A government website that doesn’t look like a government website.

My first impression of new whitehouse.gov website looks cool, very sophisticated, easy to navigate, most of the stuff accessible in few clicks. One cool addition is whitehouse blog. Today first blog post is written by Macon Phillips, the Director of New Media. Macon Phillips is titled: “Change has come to Whitehouse.gov.” He suggested that blog post is going to continue by him and other staff of “New Media”. He assures that WhiteHouse.gov and the rest of the Administration’s online programs will put citizens first and laid down three priorities for new media efforts. – Communication, Transparency and Participation.

There are a number of feeds (though some are still empty as I wrote this):

Hopefully, the administration will continue some of the experiments with citizen participation which it tried on Change.gov, its transition Website. Whitehouse.gov certainly has the same look and feel. However, currently, no social networking connections to be found on new website.

Congratulations to Mr. President and Mr. Vice-President. And Good luck!

PrefectStorm brings BlackBerry Storm theme into iPhone

January 15th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Apple, Geek, iPhone by admin

Those who switched from Blackberry phone to Apple iPhone and still missing their Blackberry, good news for you. PerfectStrome theme is available for download which gives feel and look of Blackberry to your iPhone.

Once the theme is installed, you’ll see that most of the user interface has been changed to resemble the Storm. This includes icons, lock-screen, calculator, media player, camera, dialer, sounds, Safari, and even a keyboard skin.

Downside: as always the case with iPhone theme, a jailbroken device is required (see this: How to set it free?)

Check out this MMi thread to see several nicer screen snaps, details on what you need to take the theme to the fullest, and a download link.
