Sony Ericsson W950i

May 28th, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Mobile & Wireless, Phone, Reviews by admin

Modeled after the Walkman phone series, the W950i follows the W900i closely–both are 3G phones optimized for music playback. However, that is where the similarities end. Departing from the swivel design, Sony Ericsson has returned to the conventional candy-bar form factor for the W950i. Where its predecessor used the company’s proprietary interface, the W950i chose the Symbian UIQ operating system, previously available only on the P-series phones such as the P910i and the upcoming P990i. In fact, at first glance, the Walkman smart phone closely resembles the M600i, minus the dual-function keypad of the latter. …Read more on the Sony Ericsson W950i

The Origami DVD Player is a portable DVD player concept that could be manufactured with a new e-paper (a full-color flexible display technology) being developed by Mag-Ink in Israel. As a product, it would target the business traveler who wants a convenient way to watch DVD movies. For this user, portability is a key requirement, but they are not interested in sacrificing their viewing experience and are willing to invest extra money for a higher quality product.

Pandora Personal Radio

Slim Devices announces the support of the Pandora personalized radio stream on the Squeezebox audio streaming device.

I just tried the Pandora music service that is based on the Music Genome Project, and it is amazing. You type in a song or artist and it will generate automatic a set of songs similar to your query. It even gives you a sentence or two on why it recommends the selected titles. One funny thing is that it will not play your selected song right away due to license limitation at least on the free player on the Pandora site. Give it a try, it really is great way to find new artists and songs that match your taste.

Squeezebox CEO says about Pandora: "The first time I used Pandora on my Squeezebox, I was glued to my listening chair for the entire weekend. I used to get the thrill of finding a new song I liked once a week. Now I feel it one song after another, listening to any style of music."

Comcast rolls out Motorola cable modem with battery backup

May 24th, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Digital home, Phone, Voice Over IP (VOIP) by admin

If you’ve made the break and use a VoIP service as your only landline,
you may have noticed one of the main downsides of the option
(especially if you live in a rural or isolated area): if the power goes
out, so does your phone line. Hooking up a UPS can help, but can also
be expensive and may not provide power for more than an hour or so.
However, help is on the way, at least if you get your VoIP access as
part of a bundled plan from Comcast. The company plans to offer
Motorola’s SBV5220 cable modem to at least some of its customers as
part of its $39.95 Digital Voice service. The SBV5220 includes its own
lithium-ion backup battery, which provides up to 8 hours of power. Of
course, if you use a cordless phone and it isn’t fully charged before
the lights go off, this may not do you a whole lot of good, so be sure
to keep those phones charged.
